Economic and Social Council Elects New Members to World Food Programme Executive Board, Peacebuilding Commission’s Organizing Committee

The Economic and Social Council today filled outstanding vacancies on the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission and the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP).

The Council elected by acclamation Croatia, Italy, Republic of Korea, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago to the Organizational Committee, in accordance with the terms of a related resolution adopted earlier today, also without a vote (document E/2015/L.4).  That text decided the regional distribution of the seats for Economic and Social Council members, giving one seat each to the five regional groups:  African States; Asian States; Eastern European States; Latin American and Caribbean States; and Western European and Other States.  The remaining two seats would be filled by Nepal and Brazil, also elected by acclamation.  All terms were set to expire 31 December 2016.

The representative of Tunisia reminded delegates that the resolution recalled that due consideration should be given to countries that had experienced post-conflict recovery in the composition of the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission.

Turning to fill a seat on the Executive Board of the WFP vacated due to the resignation of Panama, the Council elected Guatemala, without a vote.  That position would be effective immediately and expire on 31 December 2017.

The Economic and Social Council will next meet at a date and time to be determined.
