New Permanent Representative of Sudan Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, Omer Dahab Fadl Mohamed, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Mohamed was Sudan’s ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2012, part of which period he was concurrently accredited to Belarus and Kazakhstan.  Before that, he served as Chair of the Committee on Justice, Reconciliation, Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of the Government’s delegation to the Inter-Sudanese Peace Talks on Darfur.

Mr. Mohamed was Director of the Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution Department of Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2010, a position he assumed after having served at his country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva from 2004.

From 1999 to 2001, he headed the International Treaties Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, upon completing a term at his country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.  He has also served at his country’s embassies in Malaysia (1991-1994), former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1987-1990) and the United Arab Emirates (1984-1987) after joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982.

He holds a master’s degree in law from the People’s Friendship University of Russia and a master’s degree from the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization in Malaysia.

Mr. Mohammed, who has published books and articles and presented papers on his country’s foreign policy, is married and has children.
