Headquarters’ New Courtroom Reflects Organization’s Ongoing Commitment to Internal Justice, Rule of Law, Secretary-General Says at Inauguration

Following are UN Secretary‑General Ban Ki‑moon’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, on the inauguration of a new courtroom at Headquarters, in New York today:

I am pleased to participate in the inauguration of this new courtroom at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

I thank the Office of Administration of Justice, the Capital Master Plan and the Department of Management for closely cooperating to construct and equip a courtroom that honours the mandate of the United Nations Dispute Tribunal.

On 1 July, we marked the fifth anniversary of the new system of the administration of justice at the United Nations.  With today’s inauguration — and the opening of professional courtrooms in Geneva and in Nairobi last year — the vision of the General Assembly has taken a vital step forward.  These courtrooms reflect the Organization’s ongoing commitment to internal justice.

The General Assembly established the system “to ensure respect for the rights and obligations of staff members and the accountability of managers and staff members alike.”  The continued fulfilment of this mandate is critical if the Organization is to continue to successfully carry out its important work around the globe.

The United Nations promotes the rule of law around the world.  We must uphold justice at home.   This demands more than good facilities.  It requires integrity and commitment.

I count on those who will work here to make full use of this courtroom and strive to ensure that all staff receive the justice to which they are entitled.

In that spirit, I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to all those who support and serve in the system of administration of justice at the United Nations.  Best wishes for the great success of this new courtroom.  Thank you.
