Strongly Condemning Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Mali, Secretary-General

Says ‘This Crime’ Will Not Diminish Resolve of United Nations

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns today’s improvised explosive device explosion 30 kilometres west of Timbuktu in Mali that killed one United Nations peacekeeper from Burkina Faso and injured six other blue helmets.

The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the family of the victim and the Government and people of Burkina Faso.  He wishes a speedy and full recovery to the injured.

This crime, committed against United Nations personnel as they carried out their mandate, will not diminish the resolve of the United Nations to support the Malian people in their efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to their country, as mandated by the Security Council in resolution 2164 (2014).
