Deeply Concerned by Growing Military Mobilization in Tripoli, Secretary-General
Urges All Parties Not to Undermine Democratic Transition
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by recent developments in Libya, in particular the growing military mobilization in and around the capital Tripoli. Armed confrontation risks negating the sacrifices made by the Libyan people during their struggle for freedom and human dignity, particularly at this critical juncture in the political transition process. The Secretary-General calls on all parties and leaders of military formations to abide by their moral and legal obligations to safeguard and protect civilians.
The Secretary-General urges all parties in Libya to refrain from acts which undermine the democratic transition, and also to resume dialogue. He reaffirms his full support for the efforts of his Special Representative and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL, who stand ready to facilitate such dialogue in the interest of peace and national unity.
