Secretary-General Appoints María Eugenia (Gina) Casar of Mexico

 

Associate Administrator, United Nations Development Programme

 


United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of María Eugenia (Gina) Casar of Mexico as Under-Secretary-General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).


Ms. Casar succeeds Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica, who has taken up a new assignment as Secretary-General of Secretaría General Iberoamericana.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Ms. Grynspan for her leadership and advocacy on issues such as inequality, social cohesion, and the empowerment of women during her term with UNDP.


Ms. Casar has a rich and distinguished career, with wide-ranging management experience in both private and public sectors (national and international) and in academia.  She is currently serving as Assistant Secretary-General for Programme Planning, Budget and Accounts, Controller and Representative of the Secretary-General for the investments of the assets of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund.  She also served as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director for Resource Management and Accountability and Chief Financial Officer (2009-2011), and Chief Financial Officer and Director of Finance and Budget (2004-2006) at the World Food Programme in Rome.


Before joining the United Nations, she was National Treasurer of Mexico; Chief Financial Officer, Banco Nacional de Servicios Financieros; Deputy General Director, Banking Sector, Ministry of Finance; and Deputy Vice-President, National Banking Commission in Mexico.  She began her career as a Professor and headed the School of Accounting and Administration, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México.


Ms. Casar holds a degree in public accounting, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México.
