Secretary-General Appoints Lieutenant General Jose Luiz Jaborandy of Brazil

Force Commander for United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Jose Luiz Jaborandy, Jr., of Brazil as Force Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Lieutenant General Jaborandy, Jr., will replace Lieutenant General Edson Leal Pujol, also of Brazil, on 15 March.  The Secretary-General pays tribute to Lieutenant General Pujol’s service with MINUSTAH, where his dedication, professionalism and leadership contributed greatly to United Nations stabilization efforts in Haiti.

Having joined the Brazilian Army in 1976, Lieutenant General Jaborandy, Jr., graduated as an infantry officer in 1979, and has subsequently had a distinguished military career, holding a number of senior command and staff positions.  As a major general, he commanded the 2^nd Jungle Infantry Brigade from 2010 to 2011, when he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Amazon Military Command.  After earning promotion to his present rank in 2013, he was assigned as commander of the 8^th Military Region, his most recent command position.

Lieutenant General Jaborandy, Jr., has also served as Parliamentary Adviser to the Cabinet of the Army Commander.  He was a military observer with the United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador in 1992, having played a similar role with the United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA) in 1991.

He is a graduate of the Brazilian Army Command and General Staff College and Portugal’s Institute of Higher Military Studies.

Born in 1958, Lieutenant General Jaborandy, Jr., is married.
