Security Council 2140 Sanctions Committee Discusses Sanctions Implementation with Yemen, Members of Gulf Cooperation Council

On 26 November, at its second formal meeting, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2140 (2014) continued its dialogue with the representatives to the United Nations of Yemen and the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — namely, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.  A representative of the GCC organization also participated in the meeting.

Meeting participants heard a briefing by the Coordinator of the Panel of Experts on Yemen on the sanctions implementation frameworks in place in the countries visited by the Panel.  They expressed their support for the objectives of resolution 2140 (2014), which aims to deter and constrain the activities of those who engage in or provide support for acts that threaten the peace, security or stability of Yemen.  They also emphasized the need to implement the assets freeze and the travel ban with regard to the three individuals designated by the Committee.

Committee members encouraged Member States to respond in a timely manner to the information requests submitted by the Panel of Experts on implementation related aspects of the assets freeze and the travel ban.  They also encouraged all Member States to approach the Committee should they need assistance in improving their capacity to implement sanctions measures or any guidance on the scope and implementation of the two measures.
