Security Council Adopts Annual Report to General Assembly

The Security Council today adopted its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2014.

Opening the meeting, Council President María Cristina Perceval (Argentina) expressed appreciation to the delegation of Rwanda, which, she said, prepared the introduction of the draft report as President of the Council in July 2014, with the participation of the other Council members.  She also thanked the Secretariat, which prepared the body of the report.

She pointed out that the draft was prepared in accordance with the note by the President of 26 July 2010 (document S/2010/507).

The representative of Rwanda, Richard Gasana, said that the way in which the introduction was drafted this year presented a model of consensus for the Council.  The introduction provided a thematic context for the 238 formal meetings of the body, of which 218 were public, resulting in 55 resolutions as presented in the report.

It was his hope that the information in the report would continue to be a guide to activity in the maintenance of peace and security, he said.  Assessment of the effectiveness of the report in that context, as well as suggestions for improvements, would continue to be appreciated, he added.

Following those statements, the Council unanimously adopted the report; the action was reflected in a note by the President, to be issued as document S/2014/750.

The meeting began at 3 p.m. and ended at 3:19 p.m.
