Security Council Press Statement on Attack Against African Union-United Nations

Hybrid Operation in Darfur

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Oh Joon ( Republic of Korea):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the killing of one Rwandan peacekeeper, and injuring of three others, from the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), on 24 May in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, while they were attending a mediation meeting between two disputing tribes.

The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the peacekeeper killed in the attack, as well as to the Government of Rwanda and to UNAMID.  They called on the Government of Sudan swiftly to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission.
