The General Assembly re-elected Achim Steiner today as Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for a two-year period beginning on 15 June 2014.
Nominated by the Secretary-General, Mr. Steiner was first elected to a four‑year term in 2006, winning re-election in 2010.
In other business today, the Assembly approved the recommendation of its Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) to appoint Ye Xuenong ( China) as a member of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) for a term beginning on 7 March 2014 and ending on 31 December 2016. He replaced his compatriot Zhang Wanhai, who passed away on 11 February.
Acting on the recommendations of its General Committee, the Assembly decided to add two topics to the agenda of its current session — “Election of members of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law” and “Investigation into the conditions and circumstances resulting in the tragic death of Dag Hammarskjöld and of the members of the party accompanying him”. Both items will be considered in plenary.
In its final action today, the Assembly took note of Uruguay’s appointment to the Committee on Conferences for a period beginning on 7 March and ending on 31 December 2015.
The Assembly will meet again at a date and time to be announced.
