New Permanent Representative of Guatemala Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the United Nations, Fernando Carrera Castro, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.


Since January 2013, Mr. Carrera Castro has served as his country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.  From 2011 to 2012, he was Secretary-General of the Presidential Planning and Programming Secretariat.


Prior to that, Mr. Carrera Castro was Director of the Soros Foundation’s office in Guatemala, a post he held from 2009 to 2010, after serving as Director of ICEFI, a Central American think tank on fiscal issues, from 2007 to 2009.


From 1994 to 2006, he was a staff member of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) at various duty stations.


Mr. Carrera Castro completed his undergraduate studies at the National University of Costa Rica and graduate studies at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. 


Born in April 1966, he is married and has two daughters.
