Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Costa Rica Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations, Juan Carlos Mendoza García, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Until his appointment, Mr. García was a presidential candidate in Costa Rica, representing the Citizens Action Party in the primary elections.  Previously, he served as Congressman representing the Citizens Action Party from 2010 until 2014, during which time he was President of Congress from 2011 to 2012 and opposition leader from 2010 until 2011.

Mr. García attended a number of Committees while in Congress, including, among others, the Permanent Commission of Economic Issues; Permanent Commission of International Affairs and Commerce; Commission on Electricity; and Commission to Ensure Access to Water as a Human Right.  He is also the founder and leader of “Movimiento Esperanza” within the Citizens Action Party.

Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Costa Rica, Mr. García is a candidate for a master’s degree in communication and development, also from the University of Costa Rica.

Mr. García was born in 1975.
