Biographical Note


NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF AZERBAIJAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, Yashar Teymur oglu Aliyev, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.


Before his latest appointment, Mr. Aliyev served as Ambassador-at-Large for the Greater Middle East, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2011.


He was previously Ambassador to the United States between 2006 and 2011, with concurrent non-resident accreditation to Mexico between 2007 and 2011 and Cuba in 2006.  In earlier postings to New York, he served as Permanent Representative between 2002 to 2006, and as Counsellor and Chargé d’affaires from 1992 and 2002.


Serving earlier at the Foreign Ministry, from 1990 to 1992, he was First Secretary, Deputy Head and Head of the Department of International Organizations.  From 1989 to 1990, he was a Political Officer in the Department of Information and Political Analysis in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan.


Mr. Aliyev holds a degree in oriental studies from Azerbaijan State University (1972–1977).  His carried out his post-graduate work at the Oriental Studies Institute, Soviet Academy of Sciences, in Moscow (1980-1982), and he also attended the Diplomatic Academy in the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1991-1992).


Born on 19 August 1955 in Baku, Azerbaijan, he is married and has three children.
