New Permanent Representative of Lao People’s Democratic
Republic Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the United Nations, Khiane Phansourivong, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.
From 2008 until his latest appointment, Mr. Phansourivong was the Director-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Department in his country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Before that, he served as Assistant Director in the Bureau for External Relations and Coordination at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 2007 to 2008, and as Coordinator for External Relations between 2005 and 2007.
Mr. Phansourivong was Deputy Director General of the Foreign Ministry’s ASEAN Department from 2004 to 2005, and Director of the ASEAN Economic Cooperation Division in the Department of Economic Affairs from 2001 to 2004. From 1997 until 2001, he was Senior Officer at the ASEAN Secretariat’s Bureau of Economic Cooperation in Jakarta.
Educated at Patna University in India, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, mathematics and English, a Master of Arts in economics and a doctorate in economics.
Born on 2 November 1957, Mr. Phansourivong is married and has two children.
