in Syria, Urging All Parties to Seek Political Solution of Conflict

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns yesterday’s shelling against the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Damascus, which killed one and wounded nine people, including from the Embassy personnel.  He extends his deep condolences to the family of the victim and to the Government of the Russian Federation, and extends his sympathies to those injured and wishes them a swift recovery.  The Secretary-General underlines the importance of holding the perpetrators accountable.

As the violence in Syria causes growing levels of suffering and destruction, the Secretary-General reiterates his appeal to all Syrian, regional and international actors to show vision and leadership and act in concert towards a political solution of the conflict.
