Saddened by Death of Former President, Secretary-General

 

Praises Leader’s Strong Support for Cyprus Reunification

 

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General was saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides today in Nicosia.  Mr. Clerides was a highly respected leader of his country and ofthe Greek Cypriot community.  He was known for his strong support for the reunification of Cyprus and for many years played a central role in the United Nations-facilitated talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement.

The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the family of the late Mr. Clerides.
