Secretary-General Hails Netherlands for ‘Major Contribution’

of Troops to Peacekeeping Mission in Mali

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the decision of the Government of the Netherlands to make a major contribution to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

The Government of the Netherlands answered the recent calls to strengthen the capacity of MINUSMA by committing a major military element, including four armed helicopters, other critical assets and approximately 380 military, police and civilian personnel.  This contribution dovetails with existing Dutch development cooperation efforts in Mali.

The Secretary-General reiterates his call to Member States to assist MINUSMA in reaching its full authorized strength and in implementing its mandate in support of sustainable peace and security in Mali.
