Secretary-General Strongly Condemns Deadly Sinai Ambush of Police, Calling Also
for Probe into Prisoners’ Deaths in Custody during Transfer
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General strongly condemns the latest ambush in the Sinai on two mini-buses which killed 25 Egyptian police officers. The Secretary-General expresses the hope that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
The Secretary-General is also deeply disturbed by the reported deaths, in a separate incident, of 36 prisoners in police custody Sunday night as they were being transferred from one facility to another. He calls for a full investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.
The Secretary-General conveys his condolences to the families of the victims.
