Secretary-General Congratulates Malians on Successful Polling, Boubacar Keïta
on Election as President, Reiterates Commitment to Country’s Reconciliation
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
The Secretary-General congratulates the authorities and the people of Mali for the successful conduct of the presidential election on 28 July and 11 August.
The Secretary-General takes note of the provisional results of the election announced today by the Government of Mali. As Mali awaits the confirmation of the results by the Constitutional Court, the Secretary-General congratulates Ibrahim Boubacar Keїta on his election as President of the Republic of Mali.
The Secretary-General also acknowledges the acceptance of the outcome by Soumaïla Cissé, the second-place candidate in the presidential election. He salutes his commitment to democratic principles.
The Secretary-General reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to accompany Mali in the next phase of its stabilization and peace consolidation process, including by supporting inclusive dialogue and reconciliation and the conduct of the national legislative elections. The United Nations also stands ready to support the re-establishment of State authority in the north of Mali, the protection of human rights and the implementation of key reforms that will lay the foundation for sustainable peace, stability and development to the benefit of all the Malian people.
