Secretary-General, in Message, Urges Youths to Demand Accountability, Exercise
Influence as Consumers, Provide Momentum in Ensuring Sustainable Future
Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message to the twelfth Youth Assembly, in New York, 7 August:
Welcome to the twelfth global Youth Assembly. You meet in momentous times. You belong to the largest generation of youth the world has known.
The challenges are many — for jobs, for opportunity, for social justice and environmental sustainability. The clock is ticking on the Millennium Development Goals and much remains to be done.
United Nations Member States are also working hard on a blueprint for a post-2015 development agenda that will meet the needs of people and the planet.
World leaders are responsible to ensure your sustainable future. But you have a major role to play. Demand accountability. Exercise influence as consumers and commentators. Provide momentum through your ideas.
Last month we were all inspired by Malala Yousafzai, at the Youth Takeover at the UN. Let us follow her example to stand for what is right and act on our convictions.
When we work together we can create the future we want. Thank you for coming together to do just that. I wish you a stimulating and productive meeting.
