Ahead of 28 July Elections in Mali, Secretary-General Calls for Orderly Process,
Strong Voter Turnout, Adherence to Candidates’ Code of Conduct
The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:
As Mali prepares to hold its presidential election on 28 July, the Secretary-General reiterates his call for a peaceful, credible and transparent process in line with the aspirations of the Malian people. He calls on all concerned to ensure that the electoral process takes place in an orderly manner. He encourages all Malian voters to exercise their democratic right to vote.
The Secretary-General welcomes the Code of Conduct adopted by the candidates and trusts that they will fully adhere to all its provisions, including the need to resolve any disputes through peaceful and legal means.
The Secretary-General notes the importance of this election for the restoration of constitutional order and national dialogue and reconciliation in Mali. He also reaffirms the continued support of the United Nations for the Malian peace and stabilization process.
