Secretary-General Hails Central African Republic’s Government of National Unity

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General welcomes the formation of the Government of National Unity in the Central African Republic, in accordance with the agreements signed in Libreville on 11 January.  This is an important step towards the consolidation of the peacebuilding process.

The Secretary-General encourages all parties to respect the provisions of the Ceasefire Agreement signed on 11 January 2013, and to take appropriate measures to ensure the protection of civilians across the country.  He emphasizes the urgent need for support from the international community to address humanitarian and assistance needs in the country.
