Secretary-General Appoints Major General Imam Edy Mulyono of Indonesia

Force Commander of UN Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Major General Imam Edy Mulyono of Indonesia as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

He will succeed Major General Abdul Hafiz of Bangladesh, whose tour of duty ended on 23 July, and to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for his exemplary service and contribution to the work of MINURSO since July 2011.

Major General Mulyono brings vast national and international military experience to his new position, including command and staff expertise.  Currently Special Assistant to the Army Chief of Staff in charge of Peacekeeping Operations, he previously served as Senior Staff Officer for Training and Exercises from 2010 to 2012.

From 2012 to 2013, Major General Mulyono was the Commander of the Indonesian Defence Forces Peacekeeping Centre.  Between 2008 and 2010, he was Associate Professor at the Army Command General and Staff College, and from 1996 to 1997, he was a military observer with the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).  He joined the Indonesian army in 1984, commanding an infantry company from 1993 to 1994 and an infantry battalion in 1999.

Major General Mulyono holds master’s degrees in strategic studies from Nanyang Technological School in Singapore and from the United States War College.

Born in Kutoarjo in 1961, he is married.
