Secretary-General Appoints Abdoulaye Mar Dieye of Senegal Assistant Administrator, United Nations Development Programme

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Abdoulaye Mar Dieye of Senegal as Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He will replace Tegegnework Gettu, who has taken up his new appointment as Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Management.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Mr. Gettu for his dedication and commitment to the Organization during his term as Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa.

Mr. Dieye has many years of distinguished service within UNDP, most recently as Chief of Staff and Director of the Executive Office since 2009.  Before that, he served as Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States, overseeing UNDP programme portfolios in North Africa, the Middle East and the Gulf countries.

He has held various leadership positions, including as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Operations in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI); and United Nations Resident Coordinator, United Nations Designated Official for Security, Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Abidjan.

Mr. Dieye has also held several senior positions with the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, including Senior Economist, Chief Economist and Chief of Policy, and Country Director of Programmes and Operations for West Africa.

Before joining the United Nations, Mr. Dieye held a series of senior positions in Senegal, including Chief of the General Planning Division in the Ministry of Planning and Cooperation.

An Ingenieur Statisticien Economiste, Mr. Dieye graduated from the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Économique of the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques in Paris.  He also holds a master’s degree in development studies from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague.

Born in 1952, he is married and has four children.
