Security Council Unanimously Adopts Its Annual Report to General Assembly

Covering Period August 2012-July 2013

The Security Council adopted today its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2012 to 31 July 2013.

Opening the meeting, Council President Agshin Mehdiyev ( Azerbaijan) said the report’s introduction had been prepared by the delegation of the United States during its July presidency of the Council, with the participation of the other Council members.  The Secretariat had prepared the body of the report, he added.  Expressing appreciation for those contributions, he said the report had been prepared in accordance with the Note by the President of 26 July 2010 (document S/2010/507).

The representative of the United States said the draft report included a comprehensive account of all Council meetings and activities, as well as the range of thematic issues covered during the review period.  The United States delegation had aimed to strike a careful balance by including a useful amount of substance while keeping the report as concise as possible, he said, expressing hope that it would not “sit forgotten” in a corner of the Council’s website.

In compiling the report, the delegation of the United States had relied primarily on the Council’s monthly assessments, agreed by consensus throughout the year, he continued.  While responsibility for assembling the report had fallen to that delegation, it was indeed a product of the collaboration among all Council members.  To ensure that the text accurately reflected the Council’s work, it had been reviewed by States holding Council membership during the review period.  “Their commitment and cooperation was essential to achieving this result,” he said.

The Council unanimously adopted the report, and the action will be reflected in a Note by the President, to be issued as document S/2013/635.

Beginning at 10:05 a.m., the meeting ended at 10:10 a.m.
