Perspectives on Governance to Be Subject of Headquarters Panel Discussion

A panel discussion featuring perspectives on governance will be held on Tuesday, 5 March, at 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room 6 of the North Lawn Building.  Organized by the United Nations Academic Impact initiative of the Department of Public Information, the programme coincides with the release of The Governance Report 2013, prepared by a team of experts associated with the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany.

The report examines the changing conditions of governance, the challenges and opportunities involved, and the implications and recommendations that present themselves to analysts and policymakers in terms of good governance.  The authors of the report note that it raises a number of important questions.

Has the international community made progress in regulating financial markets or combating poverty?  Do national and local governments respond adequately to public debt?  Do corporate leaders manage businesses in economically and socially responsible ways?  And does civil society contribute to public problem solving?  Should the United Nations establish a high-level commission on responsible sovereignty, charged with developing the concept and its policy implications?

The discussion forum will include presentations by Helmut K Anheier, Dean of the Hertie School of Governance and Academic Director of the Centre for Social Investment at Heidelberg University in Germany; Inge Kaul, Adjunct Faculty Member at the Hertie School of Governance and former Director of the Office of Development Studies at the United Nations Development Programme; Jason E. Lane, Deputy Director for Research with the Rockefeller Institute of Government at the State University of New York; Patricia E. Salkin, Dean and Professor of Law at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center; and Roland Schatz, Founder and CEO of Media Tenor International in Switzerland.
