United Nations Department of Public Information Increases

 

Global Network of Associated NGOs

 

Seventeen non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were approved for association with the United Nations Department of Public Information at the second biennial meeting of the Department’s Committee for Association held in New York on 17 December 2012.  This brings the number of NGOs associated with the Department in the area of communications and information outreach to 1,340.

In describing partnerships with NGOs, Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division, emphasized that the Department greatly values its partnership with civil society and as he welcomes the newly associated NGOs, he looks forward to collaborating with them to achieve mutual goals and objectives.  The Department seeks to build on this partnership to enhance the outreach to civil society advocates who play an active role in working with the United Nations in promoting peace, disarmament, democracy, development and human rights.

The newly associated NGOs cover a wide range of issues on the United Nations post-2015 development agenda including health, environment, sustainable development, women’s issues, education, labour and refugees.

The following are the newly associated NGOs (alphabetically listed):  Agewell Foundation (India); American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (United States); Association for the Care of Diabetes in Argentina-CUI.D.AR (Argentina); Associacao Brasileira de Recursos Humanos (Brazil); Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) (United States); Cell of Alternative Youth Activities (KEAN) (Greece); The City College of New York (United States); Creative Visions Foundation (United States); Fordham University (United States); Gaia Education (United Kingdom); Global Forum on Human Settlements (China); Instituto Embratel 21 (Brazil); Treasureland Health Builders (Nigeria); União Geral dos Trabalhadores (General Workers Union) (Brazil); and Youth Arts New York (Hibakusha Stories) (United States).

Bridges of Hope Project, Inc., and the Kripalu Centre for Yoga and Health, both of the United States, were granted two-year probationary association status, during which they are expected to widen opportunities for partnership and cooperation with United Nations entities on regional and global levels.
