Chair Calls Adjournment until End of Month after Special Committee

on Peacekeeping Operations Proves Unable to Conclude Its Work

The Chair of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations today urged delegations to identify solutions and “a way forward to conclude our work”, as she adjourned the meeting until “not later than 28 March of this year”.

Before the adjournment, Special Committee Chair Joy Ogwu ( Nigeria) said that, because the Working Group of the Whole had been unable to complete its work, she was calling a short suspension in order for groups to re-engage in consultations and return “with results”.  However, after approximately two hours, she said she had been informed that progress had not been achieved.

In calling for an adjournment, the Chair said it was clear that more time was needed, not only for delegations to continue their efforts, but also for her to consult with members and other stakeholders in the coming days on strategies that would propel the Special Committee’s work to a conclusion.

Commenting on the proposed adjournment, Egypt’s representative, speaking on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, said the earlier unilateral suspension of the substantive session, in contravention of the relevant rules of procedure, had resulted in today’s impasse.  The Non-Aligned Movement, therefore, supported the Chair’s proposed adjournment for her stated purposes, he said.
