Committee Will Hold Special Meeting, Other Events to Mark International Day

of Solidarity with Palestinian People, 25 November

NEW YORK, 22 November (Division for Palestinian Rights) — The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will hold a special meeting in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber at 10 a.m. on Monday, 25 November, in accordance with General Assembly resolutions 32/40 B of 2 December 1977 and 67/21 of 30 November 2012.

The speakers at the special meeting include the Chairman of the Committee, the President of the General Assembly, the Deputy Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, as well as other representatives of intergovernmental and civil society organizations.  Meetings in observance of the Solidarity Day at the United Nations Offices at Geneva and Vienna will be held on 29 November.  The meeting in New York will be webcast live at http://webtv.un.org.

At 1 p.m., the Committee has arranged for the screening of the documentary film State 194 in the ECOSOC Chamber.  Directed by Dan Setton and produced by Elise Pearlstein, the film focuses on former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s 2009 plan to demonstrate that his people were deserving of statehood, inspiring them to change their destiny and seek United Nations membership.

All Member States and Observers have been invited to attend the special meeting and the film screening.  United Nations family organizations, intergovernmental organizations and the Committee's network of civil society organizations have also been invited to attend.    The proceedings, including messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people received in connection with the observance of the Day, will be published in a Special Bulletin of the Division for Palestinian Rights of the United Nations Secretariat.

Also, the Committee, in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission for the State of Palestine to the United Nations and UNRWA, will present a cultural event — a concert featuring two Palestinian singers, Nai Barghouti and Mohammed Assaf, UNRWA Regional Youth Ambassador and Winner of Arab Idol 2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the ECOSOC Chamber.  The press interested in attending the concert can obtain a ticket, on a first-come first-served basis due to the limited space, at the Media Accreditation and Liaison Office (Room S-250) on Monday, 25 November.  TV crews and photographers should be in the Media Accreditation and Liaison United office at 6 p.m. on the day of the concert and will be escorted to the media booths in the ECOSOC Chamber.  Only portions of the concert can be recorded.
