General Assembly Elects Chad, Chile, Lithuania, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia
As Non-Permanent Members of Security Council
New Candidates Sail Through After Single Ballot
In one round of voting, the General Assembly today elected Chad, Chile, Lithuania, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for the next two years.
Those elected will fill seats to be vacated on 31 December by Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo. Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, Republic of Korea and Rwanda will continue to serve as elected Council members during 2014, completing the second year of their respective terms. All new Council members will take their seats on 1 January 2014.
The five non-permanent members were elected according to the following pattern: three seats for African and Asia- Pacific States, one seat for Eastern European States, and one seat for Latin American and Caribbean States. Each newly elected member met the required two-thirds majority of the vote.
The Assembly will next convene on Monday, 21 October, to take up the Secretary-General’s report on follow-up to the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
