General Assembly Appoints Vinay Kumar (India) to Complete Compatriot’s Term
as Member of Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions
The General Assembly today appointed Vinay Kumar ( India) to the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ), effective immediately, for a term ending on 31 December.
Mr. Kumar’s nomination by the Government of India followed the resignation of his compatriot, Namgya C. Khampa, and was endorsed by the Group of Asia-Pacific States. The Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) discussed the matter on 4 March and recommended that the General Assembly appoint Mr. Kumar.
The Advisory Committee, a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly, comprises 16 members. Its major functions are: to examine and report on the budget submitted by the Secretary-General to the Assembly; to advise the Assembly concerning administrative and budgetary matters referred to it; to examine, on behalf of the Assembly, the administrative budgets of the specialized agencies and proposals for financial arrangements with those agencies; and to consider and report to the Assembly on the reports of auditors concerning the accounts of the United Nations and its specialized agencies.
In other business today, the General Assembly took note that Sudan, Dominica, Saint Lucia and Seychelles had made the payments necessary to reduce their arrears below the amount specified in Article 19 of the United Nations Charter.
The General Assembly will reconvene at a date and time to be decided.
