Fifty-first Session
2nd Meeting* (PM)
Commission on Social Development Elects Officers
For Fifty-First Session
The Commission for Social Development held the second meeting of its fifty-first session this afternoon to elect a new Chairman and two Vice Chairpersons.
The Commission first elected by acclamation Sewa Lamsal Adhikari to replace Gyan Chandra Acharya, both of Nepal. Mr. Acharya, who was elected Chair of the current session at the Commission’s first meeting on 10 February 2012, had since resigned his post. The Commission then elected, also by acclamation, Julia Thallinger of Austria and Carlos Garcia-Gonzales of El Salvador as Vice Chairs.
At its first meeting, Larysa Belskaya of Belarus, Amira Fahmy of Egypt, and Emma Aparici of Spain were elected as Vice Chairs.
The Commission, a functional body of the Economic and Social Council, is the key body charged with follow-up and implementation of the Declaration and Programme of Action adopted at the 1995 World Summit for Social Development, held in Copenhagen. Its 46 members meet once a year in New York, usually in February.
