Secretary-General Notes Concern among Egyptians over Supreme Court Decision,

Strongly Hopes Presidential Election Will Proceed Peacefully, Inclusively

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General is following attentively Egypt’s presidential election process, which is a very important part of the transition to greater democracy that the Egyptian people have struggled so patiently and so courageously to achieve.  He notes the heightened debate and concerns among Egyptians about the implications of yesterday’s decision of the Supreme Constitutional Court regarding the parliamentary electoral law.  The Secretary-General strongly hopes that the final round of the presidential elections will proceed in a peaceful and inclusive atmosphere.  He underscores the United Nations strong support for Egypt’s transition to fully meet the legitimate expectations of the Egyptian people.
