Secretary-General, in Message for Earth Hour, Stresses Need to ‘Fuel the Future’
with Clean, Efficient, Affordable Energy
Following is the text of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message, recorded in New York on 9 March for Earth Hour on 31 March 2012:
On 31 March, the United Nations will join people, organizations and businesses around the world in switching off our lights for Earth Hour.
We do so in solidarity with the men, women and children — 20 per cent of all humankind — who live with no access to electricity. Turning off our lights is a symbol of our commitment to sustainable energy for all.
We need to fuel our future with clean, efficient and affordable energy. By acting together today, we can power a brighter tomorrow.
The United Nations is strongly behind this cause — from Earth Hour to “ Rio+20”.
Let us build the future we want.
