Secretary-General Appoints Angela Kane of Germany High Representative
for Disarmament Affairs
The Secretary-General has selected Angela Kane of Germany as High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. Ms. Kane has been serving as the Under-Secretary-General for Management since 2008. She will bring to the position over 35 years of experience at the United Nations, including relating to political and disarmament areas, recently as Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in a peacekeeping mission. Her previous function in the then-Department for Disarmament Affairs included responsibility for all activities of the World Disarmament Campaign, an effort to bring Member States together to advance the disarmament agenda through meetings, round tables, publications and other outreach efforts. She has remained engaged on these issues, as her political interest in peace and security has brought into focus the importance of disarmament and its impact on individual Member States as well as in a regional and global context. Disarmament, and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, has been a priority of the United Nations, and Ms. Kane's expertise in political issues will undoubtedly assist her in furthering our goals.
