Secretary-General Appoints Kate Gilmore of Australia Assistant Secretary-General,

 

Deputy Executive Director (Programme), United Nations Population Fund

 

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Kate Gilmore of Australia as Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director (Programme) of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Ms. Gilmore will replace Purnima Mane.  The Secretary-General is grateful to Ms. Mane for her dedicated service to UNFPA.

Ms. Gilmore brings to UNFPA more than 20 years of strategic leadership experience working on social issues in her Government and in not-for-profit organizations.  She started her career with her Government in social work and community education roles.  From 1986 to 1992, she was coordinator and then programme development manager of the Royal Women’s Hospital, Australia, where she pioneered programmes on sexual assault and developed a new human rights framework for sexual assault services in Australia.  From 1992 to 1993, she was CEO of Broadmeadows Community Health Service, then Australia’s largest community health service based in Melbourne, and from 1993 to 1996, she was manager of the division of community care in the Royal Women’s Hospital.  In 1996, she joined Amnesty International Australia as National Director, and in 2000, she was appointed Executive Deputy Secretary General of Amnesty International, based in London.

In this global role, she was responsible for 500 professional staff in headquarters and 10 regional offices, with co-responsibility for Amnesty's global strategy.  Since she left Amnesty International in 2010, Ms. Gilmore has continued her work in social issues as an independent consultant.

Born in 1958, Ms. Gilmore holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Melbourne, Australia, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New England, Australia, and has pursued post-graduate studies in social work and community development in Australia.
