Security Council Adopts Annual Report to Assembly for Year Ending 31 July 2012
The Security Council this morning adopted its annual report to the General Assembly for the period 1 August 2011 to 31 July 2012.
Opening the meeting, Council President Hardeep Singh Puri ( India) said the introduction of the report (document A/67/2) had been prepared by the delegation of Colombia as President of the Council in July 2012, with the participation of the other members of the Council. The body of the report had been prepared by the Secretariat.
Expressing appreciation to Colombia and the Secretariat for their respective contributions, the President pointed out that the draft report was prepared in accordance with the note by the Note by the President of 26 July 2010 (document S/2010/507).
Colombia’s representative, Néstor Osorio, said that during the reporting period, the Council considered events in all regions of the world. It often faced delicate situations that led it to act in order to create conditions of understanding and provide solutions, many of which encouraged the respect and promotion of fundamental rights, and protected thousands of lives. It also contributed to institutional consolidation and the protection of civilians at risk in nations where peace, stability and constitutional order were threatened.
Surveying many of the situations with which the Council had been seized, he said that the length of the report was explained by the amount and sequence of events, situations, conflicts and activities that had demanded intense work from the Council. “The period that has passed has been so troubled and eventful that the importance and responsibility of the Security Council in exercising its functions under the Charter to maintain international peace and security has become ever more paramount,” he said.
The report was adopted without a vote, with the action to be reflected in a note by the Council President, to be issued as document S/2012/815.
The meeting began at 10:08 a.m. and ended at 10:20 a.m.
