Security Council Press Statement on Killing of Peacekeepers in Darfur
The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Gert Rosenthal ( Guatemala):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the 2 October ambush by unidentified armed men on an African Union-United Nations mission (UNAMID) patrol in El Geneina, West Darfur, in which four Nigerian peacekeepers were killed and eight injured.
The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the peacekeepers killed in the attack, as well as to the Government of Nigeria. They called on the Government of Sudan to swiftly investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate with the mission.
