Security Council Press Statement on Democratic Republic of Congo
The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Néstor Osorio (Colombia):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks by the M23 rebel group on United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) peacekeepers in North Kivu on 5 July, as part of an ongoing offensive in the area, which resulted in the death of an Indian soldier in Bunagana, as well as the displacement of thousands of civilians and deaths of Democratic Republic of the Congo forces.
They expressed their sympathy to the family of the victim and MONUSCO staff, as well as to the Government of India. They called upon the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to ensure that the perpetrators of such attacks are swiftly brought to justice. They reiterated their demands that the M23 and all armed groups immediately cease all forms of violence.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for MONUSCO and its operations in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
