Security Council Press Statement on the Contribution of Courts and Tribunals
in the Fight against Impunity
The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Néstor Osorio (Colombia):
The members of the Security Council recall the contribution of the ad hoc and mixed tribunals, the International Criminal Court, as well as chambers in national tribunals in the fight against impunity for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community.
In this regard, the members of the Security Council welcome the commencement of the functioning of the Arusha branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals on 1 July 2012, and emphasize that the establishment of the Residual Mechanism pursuant to resolution 1966 (2010) was essential to ensure that the closure of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia does not leave the door open to impunity for the remaining fugitives and for those whose trials or appeals have not been completed.
The members of the Security Council also note the tenth anniversary of the International Criminal Court.
The members of the Security Council reiterate their previous call on the importance of State cooperation with these courts and tribunals, in accordance with States’ respective obligations.
