PRESS STATEMENT BY SECURITY COUNCIL ON TIMOR-LESTE

 


The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Susan Rice (United States):


The members of the Security Council welcome the holding of the second round of Presidential Elections in Timor-Leste on 16 April 2012, as well as the first round on 17 March 2012.


The members of the Security Council congratulate the people of Timor-Leste on the peaceful, smooth and orderly manner in which the elections were held.


The members of the Security Council commend the national electoral authorities (CNE and STAE) and all those responsible for the successful management of the elections, including the National Police Force (PNTL) for their role in ensuring an orderly and calm environment throughout the electoral process.


The members of the Security Council further appreciate the support provided by the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor–Leste (UNMIT) during the elections process.


The members of the Security Council consider the elections as an important milestone for the consolidation of peace and stability in Timor–Leste, and a reflection of the commitment of the people of Timor-Leste to democracy and the rule of law, and in this regard, looks forward to the holding of the Parliamentary elections on 7 July 2012.


The members of the Security Council reaffirm resolution 2037 (2012).
