Security Council Press statement on Somalia

 

The following Security Council press statement was issued on 5 April by Council President Susan Rice ( United States):

The members of the Security Council condemned, in the strongest terms, the terrorist attack that occurred in Mogadishu, Somalia, on 4 April, which resulted in deaths and injury to innocent civilians.  The attack shows complete disregard for the lives of the Somali people and for their desire to return to normal daily life in Mogadishu.  The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of this heinous crime and to their families, to the people of Somalia, and the Transitional Federal Government.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support to the Transitional Federal Government in its efforts to achieve peace, security and reconciliation through the Djibouti Peace Process, and the work of the Somali National Security Forces and the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).  They reiterated their condemnation of all acts of violence and incitement to violence against civilians, AMISOM and the Transitional Federal Government.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with the Security Council's responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations.

The members of the Security Council reminded States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
