United Nations Publications Releases First Edition of Guide to Organization’s
Responses to Major Contemporary Challenges, How It Evolved
United Nations Publications released today the first ever edition of United Nations at a Glance, a simple guide that provides a starting point for readers who are new to the Organization.
Conceived as an educational resource and illustrated with photos and real-life stories from the field, United Nations at a Glance delves into the work of the Organization in the areas of international peace and security, economic and social development, human rights and humanitarian action.
It illustrates how the Organization responds to the major contemporary challenges posed by the global financial crisis, food insecurity, terrorism, climate change, natural disasters, intolerance, poverty and epidemics by promoting the universality of human rights, peace and security for all, sustainable development, respect for the rule of law and education for all.
The guide contains historical information on how and why the United Nations came into existence, and how it evolved from an ancient philosophical idea and a nascent wartime alliance into the largest grouping of nations the world has ever known. It also explains why the Organization has become so essential to the lives of millions.
