Art Exhibit Commemorates International Day of Solidarity

With Palestinian People on 29 November

An opening ceremony for an art exhibition entitled “ Palestine:  Memories, Dreams, Perseverance” will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, 29 November, at the North-East Gallery of the Visitors Lobby.  This exhibit is presented under the auspices of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, in observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

During the ceremony, remarks will be made by Abdou Salam Diallo, Permanent Representative of Senegal to the United Nations and Chairman of the Palestinian Rights Committee; a representative of Palestine, and Manal Deeb, one of the artists featured in the exhibit.

This exhibit represents the work of four artists, who express their heritage, identity, dreams and memories through a variety of forms and materials.  The content and narrative behind each piece explains their Palestinian origin.  Manal Deeb’s work is an attempt to interpret the known versus the unknown of finding home, self and identity.  Adam Chamny’s installation works weave themes of migration, roots and belonging.  Vian Shamounki Borchert sees her paintings as a visual poem of love, a poem of hope.  Najat El-Taji El-Khairy searched for ways to protect and preserve the rich heritage of Palestinian art for generations to come in her embroidery.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed in accordance with the provisions of the General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977.  Detailed information is available at http://unispal.un.org/unispal.nsf/solidarity.htm.
