Exhibitions on Holocaust to Open at United Nations Headquarters

 

Three exhibitions on the Holocaust will open to the public in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby, as part of a week-long series of Holocaust remembrance activities at the United Nations.  The International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is 27 January and the theme of this year’s observance is “Children and the Holocaust”.

The exhibition “The Face of the Ghetto:  Pictures Taken by Jewish Photographers in the Lodz Ghetto (Litzmannstadt Ghetto), 1940-1944” opens with a formal ceremony and reception on Tuesday, 24 January, at 6 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby.  The exhibit presents new photographs of community life in the Lodz Ghetto, taken by Jewish inhabitants.  The exhibition is curated by the Topography of Terror Foundation, Berlin ( Germany) in cooperation with the State Archive in Lodz ( Poland) and co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations.

The second exhibit, entitled “A Monument of Good Deeds:  Dreams and Hopes of Children during the Holocaust”, opens on Thursday, 26 January, at 6 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the Visitors Lobby.  This multimedia exhibit consists of photos, artefacts, drawings and videos that recount the life of 13 children during the Holocaust.  Curated by Yehudit Inbar, the exhibit depicts a child’s everyday life during extraordinary and cruel times.  This exhibition is sponsored by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority, Jerusalem ( Israel).

Also on display are 16 winning entries by graphic design students in the Poster Design Competition 2012.  Entitled “Holocaust — Keeping the Memories Alive”, this display of posters is a project of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF), in cooperation with Yad Vashem, Mémorial de la Shoah ( France), and the European Shoah Legacy Institute ( Czech Republic).
