United Nations Department of Public Information Approves 29 NGOs for Association

Twenty-nine non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were approved for association with the United Nations Department of Public Information at the first meeting of the Department’s NGO Committee held in New York on 4 April 2012.  This brings the number of NGOs associated with the Department in the area of communications and information outreach to 1,322.

In describing partnerships with NGOs, Maher Nasser, Acting Head of the Department of Public Information and Director of the Outreach Division, stressed that the Department greatly values its partnership with the NGO community and that as he welcomes the newly associated NGOs, he looks forward to collaborating with them to achieve mutual goals and objectives.  The Department seeks to build on this partnership to enhance the outreach to civil society advocates who play an active role in working with the United Nations in promoting peace, democracy, development and human rights.

The newly associated NGOs cover a wide range of issues on the United Nations agenda including health, environment, sustainable development, women’s issues, education, microcredit and refugees.

(United States), Asabe Shehu Yar’Adua Foundation (Nigeria), Asociación Mujeres para el Microcrédito (Women Together) (Spain), Associated Medical Schools of New York (United States), Atlantic States Legal Foundation, Inc. (United States), Autism Research Institute (United States), Centre for Environment and Development (Sri Lanka), Classic Live for the United Nations (Japan), Deutsche Model United Nations (Germany), Education for Employment Foundation (United States), Fundación Praccesco ECO (Mexico), Instituto HSBC Solidariedade (Brazil), Instituto Humanitaire (Brazil), Medipeace (Republic of Korea), Miracle Corners of the World (United States), New York Institute for Haiti Advocacy, Inc. (United States), New York State Bar Association (United States), PCI — Media Impact (United States), Pro Mujer (United States), Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria (Nigeria), Space Generation Advisory Council in Support of the United Nations Programme on Space Application (Austria), Surgeons of Hope Foundation, Inc. (United States), Temple University of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education (on behalf of The Intergenerational Center at Temple University) (United States), Ukrainian National Environmental Non-Governmental Organization (MAMA-86) (Ukraine), University of Bridgeport (United States), U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (United States), and the Worldwide Network for Gender Empowerment (United States).

The Committee decided to give two-year probationary status to the organization, Tchad Agir Pour l’Environnement (TCHAPE) ( Chad) and encourages this NGO to work closely with the United Nations Information Centre and United Nations Information Service to build a strong relationship with the United Nations.  In addition, the Committee re-associated The Links, Inc. ( United States).

The Committee also decided to disassociate the NGO Peace Partnerships International ( United States) as the organization was no longer in operation.  The Committee also found that Action Aides aux Familles Démunies ( Mali) no longer meets the criteria for association.
