Contest Encourages Youth to Imagine World Free of Nuclear Weapons
NEW YORK, 6 December (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The Art for Peace Calendar for 2013 comprises 12 winning entries in the Art for Peace Contest 2012 (www.unartforpeace.org), sponsored by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and the Harmony for Peace Foundation with the goal of encouraging children and teens across the globe to use their creative talents to “imagine a world free of nuclear weapons”.
In time for the holiday season, the colourful Calendar is available at the United Nations Bookshop in the Visitors Hall at Headquarters in New York, or through the Bookshop’s online store (https://unp.un.org/bookshop/details.aspx?sku=X2999), and can be shipped anywhere around the world.
Running from 1 February to 30 April 2012, the contest was open to young people aged between five and 17 years. While the winners featured in the Calendar were from China, El Salvador, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, Russian Federation and the United States, the contest attracted more than 6,620 entries from 92 countries worldwide.
The contest website received more than 1.25 million page views from over 187 countries. Each contestant’s work was posted to his or her own webpage where family, friends and the public could vote for the ones they liked on Facebook and Twitter. More than 50,000 Facebook “likes”, “shares” and “wall postings” were recorded on the contest website.
Selling at $10.95 in the United Nations Bookshop, the Calendar has been discounted to $9.95 for online purchases.
