Contest Aimed at Promoting Nuclear Disarmament, Matches Prize Money

NEW YORK, 28 March (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — South-South News has joined the list of collaborating partners in support of the "Art for Peace 2012" international art contest for young people, which is being held to promote nuclear disarmament under the slogan "Imagine a World Free of Nuclear Weapons".

More than 750 entries have been received from children ages 5 to 17 years from 48 countries from all parts of the world, which have been posted on the contest website (www.unartforpeace.org).  The contest runs until the end of April when winners will be chosen.

South-South News (www.southsouthnews.com) is an initiative launched in February 2010 to advance the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals through the sharing of best practices in the areas of South-South and triangular cooperation.  It broadcast a feature on the art contest on its website (http://bit.ly/GW1Xqg).

To encourage wider participation and to support the aims of the contest, the President of South-South News, Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, has generously offered to match the prize money for winners in the age group 13 to 17 years of age.  There will now be cash prizes of $1,000 for first place, $600 for second place, $400 for third place and $200 for fourth place.  Winners in the younger age categories will receive wonderful art supplies, kindly donated by founding partner for the contest, the Harmony for Peace Foundation.
