Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of Ecuador Presents Credentials

Julio Xavier Lasso Mendoza, the new Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Until his appointment, Mr. Lasso Mendoza worked in the private sector, serving as Assistant Manager at Guayaquil Financial Institution, and as an industrial credit official at Pacific Bank.  Before that he was Chief of External Trade at the Corporación Estatal Petrolera Ecuatoriana, having previously served as Director and Administrative Secretary of El Conejo Publishing House.

He authored more than 1,000 articles in 20 years as a columnist for several media outlets, including the newspapers El Comercio and El Telgrafo, and the magazine Vistazo.  While working in broadcasting, he was Director of the radio and television programme Spoken Word, and of Telemazonas News, an opinion programme on Gamatelevision.

Working in the education field, Mr. Lasso Mendoza taught at the Liceo International School and was Director of Education, Culture and Sports for Quito Municipality.

Besides a master’s degree in social studies from the Latin American Faculty of Social Studies and a Bachelor of Laws from the Catholic University of Guayaquil, Mr. Lasso Mendoza undertook two years of economic studies at the Catholic University of Ecuador and a course on the European Economic Community at Pro Deo University in Rome.

Born in Guayaquil on 1 June 1953, he is married and has four daughters.
